What can we Champion?

Leon Viljoen, in his talk last night, stressed the point that one way to ensure species conservation is to champion a particular species that is common to our area, with which visitors could identify and recognise, even go on tours to see. We already have the Whale and the area is popularly described as the Whale Coast. Why not do the same for a bird, so that visitors to the area can be aware of its existence and want to go out and see it? With a proper logo, it could feature as part of Hermanus’ publicity and be used to attract visitors.

A couple of species come to mind, such as Victorin’s Warbler, the Orange-breasted Sunbird or the Cape Rock Jumper, but we need to choose one that is reasonably easy to see. With our large and diverse membership, we should be able to come up with an idea…
