Outing to Gabrielskloof

Hermanus Bird Club

There were only 5 members who attended the outing along the Swartrivier road and Gabrielskloof this morning. Not too good for a club with around 140 members! The weather was fresh and clear and we were welcomed at the Gabrielskloof Winery by Peter Allen Finlayson, prior to setting off for the farm. A slow drive around the vineyards and adjacent fynbos produced most of the birds we expected, with no notable specials. Then on the road back we dawdled and looked for the larks and pipits which are so frequent there. Our best sighting along this stretch was a Cape Longclaw and we actually failed to see any larks at all. Our species count for the day was 56.

Thanks to Gabrielskloof for their hospitality! It is always a pleasure to visit there!
