Sombre Greenbuls(Andropadus importunus) are often difficult to see because their dull olive green and grey colouring helps them to blend into the thick bush that they favour. What stands out for me, though, are their characteristic pale eyes. I was delighted to spot this individual that didn’t seem to mind being seen out in the open for it is immensely satisfying to photograph a bird that usually remains hidden.
I imagine the rather serious sounding ‘sombre’ epithet relates to the more or less uniform colouring of these birds. Certainly, their persistent vocalisations – often described as a piercing ‘willie’ sound – are loud enough to alert one to their presence. Although they are not easily visible, these birds feed on fruit, seeds, and nectar. Their diet also includes butterflies, bees, wasps, locusts and ants.
