Hidden Paths in Capilano River Regional Park

Northern saw-whet owl

Allaboutbirds.org: “Northern Saw-whet Owls have a distinctive too-too-too song, an insistent series of whistled notes on roughly the same pitch, given at a rate of about 2 notes per second. “

“The northern saw-whet owl is a small owl native to North America. Saw-whet owls are one of the smallest owl species in North America. Adults are 17–22 cm (6.7–8.7 in) long with a 42–56.3 cm (16.5–22.2 in) wingspan.[3][4] They can weigh from 54 to 151 g (1.9 to 5.3 oz) with an average of around 80 g (2.8 oz),[5][6] making them one of the smallest owls in North America.[7] They are similar in size to the American robin.
The northern saw-whet owl makes a repeated tooting whistle sound. Some say they sound like a…

Northern Goshawk – Jan 2020

“The name goshawk comes from the Old English word for “goose hawk,” a reference to this raptor’s habit of preying on birds. “
“Like all accipiters, Northern Goshawks display “reversed sexual size dimorphism”—females are up to 25% heavier than males.”
“The Northern Goshawk is well known for its fierce defense of its nest. It commonly attacks people and other animals that approach the nest too closely.”
