Back when we lived near Montreal, a quick week away somewhere warm was quite easy to do. We lived only 40 minutes from the Dorval (or, I should say, ‘Pierre Elliot Trudeau’) airport, so it was rather simple to drive down, abandon the car in the long-stay car park next door and embark on a flight to somewhere exotic. It’s a bit more difficult from rural Nova Scotia, a three hour drive to Halifax airport is often followed by a flight to somewhere else in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, St. John’s Newfoundland) before boarding the flight to the final destination. However, living here has other compensations! Anyhow, back in 2010, we had decided to make our first trip to Cuba-cheap, nearby, a number of endemic bird species, what’s not to like? As Canadians or, back in those days, Brits, we had no limitation on visiting this Communist…
