How did I get started with birding? Frankly I had no interest for many many years. I am an early childhood music teacher and we use bird and animal sounds for auditory discrimination. So I began to get to know the sounds of the cardinal, robin, belted kingfisher, red-winged blackbird and others. On occasion I would hear these birds outside and get very excited. One day, a yellow-crowned night heron landed right in front of me while I was running and I could get some clear pictures with my camera phone, and thus the quest for pictures began.

Over the last few years I have gone from knowing absolutely nothing about birds to something about birds (but not much!) Will I become a hardcore birder? I’m not sure! Just invested in binoculars! But I wanted to start my blog with the earliest picture I could find on my camera phone…
