Strictly a migrant around here in May and September, this shorebird can be seen picking invertebrate prey from on or just below the water surface, probing in the mud or snatching insects out of the air. Much of its breeding ecology is a mystery because it hides its nests so well in the vast boreal forests of Canada and Alaska and because it won’t budge until a predator (or researcher) is less than a yard away.
